Tedashii - Safe To Be Me (Audio)

Music Review

This song by Tedashii has Grammy Award winning Jordin Spark singing on it.
A journey of deep emotion and full of strong lyrics that emphasize the struggle, confidence and acceptance of identity. A simple tribute to Black History Month. “Tedashii states that Growing up biracial, I often felt caught between worlds. Safe To Be Me comes from that real place—my history, my hardships, my heart. My hope? That God blesses those like me to feel heard, and those who aren’t to walk away feeling helped. This one’s personal,” says Tedashii.

This song conveys resilience and courage, while at the same time introducing questions and doubts that commonly occur in the real lives of many young people and adults who fight against prejudice. “This oppression is still rampant in the land of the free” …that kills, that deliberately afflicts. And as a listener, it also makes me ask… “Is my color a joke?”

“Mulatto, mutt, mixed-race, mixed-race” makes me reflect that in a racist society, it is not enough to not be racist. It is necessary to be anti-racist, because as long as the color of one’s skin is more important than the brightness of one’s eyes and the art of words, there will be war.
