Lecrae - Drown (Music Video)

Music Review

Lecrea’s song Drown was released with his album “Restoration” on July 17, 2020. This song features singing artist John Legend who does an incredible job at bring a dynamic and dramatic tone to this song. These lyrics on the overall song express human vulnerability and awareness of how cruel and fragile life can be. The excerpt “I don’t know if I can, I’ll be honest that I’m getting weaker”, conveys an internal war, something spiritual. The metaphor of drowning brings the illustration of emotional overload, where you have the feeling that there is no way to survive that situation. The repetition of the excerpt “I'm drownin' (I'm drownin')” reinforces the urgency and gravity of the moment.

The music video for “Drown” features powerful scenes of events that reflect humanity’s vulnerability. Natural disasters, destroyed cities, submerged cars, people being rescued, natural fires that portray global warming, pandemics, and images of public figures like Kobe Bryant (a basketball legend) whose life was tragically cut short. Each image conveys a deep melancholy and the feeling that we are in a movie, living the end of times.

Lecrae’s vocal performance is profound, not only bringing the melody to life but also living that moment, bringing out the dramatic feeling of the music video, making me feel his raw emotions even more. When “Lecrae feels the rain on his face and falling on his clothes, he kneels in the water with his arms open,” he conveys a state of desperate cry for a greater force of salvation.

The lyrics “I don’t know who to turn to or who to trust so” shows anguish and lack of trust in people. “Tell me that the Lord will never let me down (let me down)” and “Because You are my last breath before I drown (drown)” interpret a cry, like the search for a last resort and only hope that is the presence of God as refuge and help. The song itself with such profound lyrics reflects a journey of spiritual struggle, human fragility, life as “a breath”, and God as our only support and salvation.
